These handpainted stratocaster style guitars are selling now on Etsy.com. They are made by gluing painter's canvas to the guitar body, the canvas is then custom painted using oil paints. The canvas surface is then sealed with a matte varnish. The guitar comes with just neck and body, without any hardware, for $380. The neck is made from maple with a rosewood fingerboard and has an unshaped headstock, for your choice of design.

The manufacturing process is a bit like the old Floral Pattern Ibanez Jems, sticking a fabric onto the guitar and then sealing it with a clear coat. If you add a strat scratch plate to this you are going to cover up half of the design!

You can also get a hand-painted Squier Telecaster for $640: this one includes all the hardware.
