The Chai family are Japanese luthiers, active since around 1959. The brand was established by Yukinobu Chai who was initially a violin maker but changed to make classical guitars as their popularity amongst the Japanese exploded in the 1960s due in part to the film "Jeux interdits". Chai Guitar Craft is carried on by Yukinobu's son Yukihiro Chai.
