Jaco Pastorius was a legendary bass player who played with Weather Report and Joni Mitchell. Jaco's best known bass was his sunburst-finish fretless 1962 Jazz Bass nicknamed the Bass of Doom, originally fretted but Jaco removed the frets. Pastorius finished the fretboard with marine epoxy to protect the wood from the round wound Rotosound Swing 66 strings he used. Pastorius' bass was heavily distressed and was repaired several times, in particular in the mid-1980s when it finally fell pieces leading to a rebuild with figured maple veneers added to the front and back for strength.
In 1999, 12 years after Pastorius died, Fender released 3 tribute models based on his Jazz Bass. Two were Artist series models: one fretted and one fretless and there was also a Custom Shop Artist model which closely copied the distressed finish and thick fingerboard epoxy of the original.
FENDER JACO PASTORIUS JAZZ BASS (FRETTED)In 1999 Fender released Artist Series Jaco Pastorius Jazz Bass models in both fretted and fretless configurations. The fretted model was discontinued around 2007. It was supplied with a tortoishell pickguard in the case that you could attached if you wanted.
FENDER Jaco Pastorius Jazz Bass FretlessThe Fender Jaco Pastorius Jazz Bass Fretless has a special commemorative Pastorius neck plate. Although this bass is fretless it has fretlines in the fingerboard - as Pastorius removed the frets from his own bass and filled the slots with filler before covering the fingerboard with marine epoxy. A interesting touch on this bass is the side dot position markers in line with the fretlines (to help position your fingers on the fretless fingerboard). It is supplied with a tortoiseshell pickguard which you can attach if you want to.
FENDER JACO PASTORIUS TRIBUTE JAZZ BASS (Custom Shop Artist, Relic)Jaco Pastorius' best known bass was his sunburst-finish fretless Jazz Bass nicknamed the Bass of Doom, which had had its frets removed. Pastorius finished the fretboard with marine epoxy to protect the wood from the round wound Rotosound Swing 66 strings he used. Pastorius' bass was heavily distressed and was repaired several times, by the mid-1980s it had literally fallen to pieces leading to a rebuild. The Fender Custom Shop cooperated with Pastorius' technician to create a meticulous re creation of Pastorius’ bass: the Custom Shop Artist Series Tribute bass. |
