The Gibson L-0, introduced in 1926, was (along with the L-1) Gibson's first production flat-top acoustic guitar.  Both the L-0 and L-1 were made economically: lightly braced, with thin woods and  finishes. This light construction gave them a great tone but also made them less robust to wear and tear. The Gibson L-0 originally had a spruce top and maple back and sides, from 1928 onwards the top, back and sides were mahogany.  The 19 fret neck originally joined the body at the 12th fret - this was changed to the 14th fret from 1932 onwards.

The L-00 (1936 REISSUE) was made between 1992 and 2002.

GIBSON manufactured the L-3 between 1902 and 1933. Production started around a decade after Orville Gibson had invented the arched top guitar. In common with the other L guitars of the time the L-3 was available in different body sizes - ranging from 12.5 to 16 inches wide. Initially the sound hole was round but this was changed to an oval soundhole from 1928 to 1933.

The L-4 was made between 1912 and 1956. Early models had a round soundhole, later ones had f-foles.

Production of the L-47 began in 1940 and ended in 1943

GIBSON made the L-48 archtop acoustic between 1946 and 1970. It was a lower end instrument with a pressed rather than carved non-cutaway arched top. The Gibson L-48 had a mahogany top except for some early ones with spruce tops and during the period from 1952 to 1957 when they had spruce tops, maple backs and mahogany sides. The fingerboard dot inlays are an easy way to tell the L-48 apart from the similar looking L-50 (although not foolproof as some early L-48s had trapezoid inlays).

Production of the Gibson L-4C began in 1949 and ended around 1971.  The Gibson L-4C was an acoustic version of the GIbson ES-145, but the L-4C had a solid spruce top whereas the ES-145 had a laminated top. The L-4C had an elegantly simple archtop body with a single Florentine cutaway with a spruce top, maple back & sides, bound Brazilian rosewood fretboard, parallelogram fingerboard inlays, 3-Ply body binding, Kluson Deluxe tuners (with plastic buttons) and Brazilian rosewood adjustable compensated bridge. The blackfaced headstock has the pearl flowerpot and logo inlay.

GIBSON manufactured the L-5 between 1922 and 1958

Comedian and singer George Gobel had a special version of the Gibson L-5 archtop guitar built in 1958, the "L-5CT" (cutaway, thin body), featuring diminished dimensions of neck scale (24 3/4") and body depth (2 3/8"), befitting his own small stature; and a cherry red finish (for optimal appearance on Gobel's new color tv show). About 45 L-5CT's were produced from 1958 to 1963, making them one of the rarest Gibson models. Most of these were acoustic guitars, although a few were shipped with pickups.

GIBSON introduced the L-CENTURY (CENTURY OF PROGRESS) model in 1933. The model was named after the Century of Progress International Exposition World's Fair held in Chicago to celebrate the city's centennial. Gibson unveiled this model at the Chicago World's Fair. Gibson had been making L-series flat top acoustics since 1926 and already had a range of models by this time.
