The Gibson 335-S Series are solid body versions of Gibson's legendary ES-335TD. Although they have the "Mickey Mouse eared" double-cutaway ES-335 shape, the 335-S bodies are smaller and thinner, but they have the same scale length and controls layout as the ES-335TD.
The 335-S was first introduced in 1980 towards the end of Gibson's Norlin era. There were three versions: the Deluxe, Custom and Standard which differed in woods, binding and hardware. The 335-S Deluxe was classed as a Professional Series model; both the Custom and Standard fell within the Firebrand Series. For this reason you will typically see "Professional" or "Firebrand" above the model name on the truss-rod cover.
In 2011 Gibson re-issued the 335-S with specifications similar to the original 335-S Standard but with sunburst finish and only one tone control.
GIBSON 335-S (Reissue)Gibson reissued the 335-S Standard model in 2011 as the 335-S. The 335-S is a solid maple bodied version of the ES-335TD, with slightly smaller and thinner body but with the same hardware and controls. Desgined for players who want the look and feel of the legendary ES-335, but need a smaller, sleeker, solidbody guitar. The 335-S is finished with nitrocellulose Vintage Sunburst or Silverburst finish, pickups are "reverse-zebra-striped" burstbuckers.
GIBSON 335-S CustomGibson made the 335-S Custom from 1980 to 1981. It was a had a solid mahogany ES-335 style double cutaway body. The 335-S Custom was the middle range model in the 335-S Series and had two Gibson Dirty Fingers humbuckers, with coil tap switch, two volume and two tone controls. The 335-S Custom had a TP6 fine tuner tailpiece and tune-o-matic bridge. As part of the Gibson Firebrand Series, the 335-S Customs usually had "FIREBRAND 335-S CUSTOM" engraved on the truss rod cover and the Gibson logo branded into the headstock.
GIBSON 335-S DeluxeGIBSON manufactured the 335-S Deluxe between 1980 and 1983. It had a scaled down ES-335TD shaped solid mahogany body, and was the top of the 335-S range with bound ebony fingerboard and brass nut. The 335-S Deluxe came with a TP6 fine tuning stop tailpiece and tune-o-matic bridge. Pickups were two Gibson Dirty Fingers humbuckers, controlled by a 3 way selector switch, coil tap switch, 2 volume and 2 tone controls.
GIBSON 335-S StandardGIBSON made the ES-335 S STANDARD (ES-335 SOLID BODY) between 1980 and 1981. It was an ES-335 shaped solid maple bodied electric with three piece maple neck and unbound rosewood fingerboard. Pickups were zebra coil Gibson Super Humbuckers, controls were two volume and two tone controls with a three way selector switch. The 335-S Standard was part of the Firebrand Series - so they typically have "Firebrand 335-S Standard" on the truss rod cover. This model was reissued in 2011 (minus one of the tone controls) as the Gibson 335-S. |
