When the Gibson ES-300 was introduced in 1940 it had the Gibson long diagonal pickup a single 6.5 inches long pickup that stretched diagonally from the bridge to the neck. This pickup had a tortoiseshell like plastic cover and was mounted diagonally extending from the fingerboard on the bass side to the bridge on the treble side, with two pairs of magnets underneath. This long diagonal pickup was not successful and was replaced on the Es-300 in 1941 by a newer version -the short diagonal with two magnets only - it had 10,000 turns of magnet wire and was also used on the L5 and super 400.
