Dates of manufacture:

1996 to 1999

GIBSON produced the THE PAUL SL between 1996 and 1999. It had some features of the Gibson "The Paul" model from 1979-1982 and was designed to be a more affordable of the Gibson Les Paul, without the fancy touches but with all the playability and tone. The truss rod on this model was initially labelled as "The PAUL II" from 1996-1998 and then "The PAUL SL" from 1998 to 1999. Unlike the 1970s "The Paul" the 1990s model has a carved top and the pickup selector switch is in the normal place.
