GIBSON produced the SG III between 1972 and 1977. It identical to the SG II except it had cherry red sunburst finish.  Less than 1000 were made in total. It had two new design Gibson mini humbucking pickups and two sliding selector switches. Controls were a single volume and single tone with black top-hat style knobs. The mahogany body was 13.125" wide, 16" long, 1.31" deep. The laminated neck had 24.75" scale length and 22 frets.

In 2007 Gibson issued another SG III guitar, but different from the 1970s model. It had a bigger white pickguard housing three single coil pickups. A single volume, tone control and 6-way rotary pickup selector were mounted on the body.
