Dates of manufacture:

This guitar is a Sigma by Martin which was produced to compete with the lower priced asian models.
D - Dreadnought
R - Rosewood
28 - Designed after the "classical" D - 28 Martin
Made in Japan 1977 until 1982 when production moved to Korea
The logo on the head actually says "Sigma by Martin Est. 1970"
There are many who flame and spam forums saying that they are fakes and not Martin, and nothing could be further from the truth. Is a Toyota Camry manufactured in the US, not a Toyota?
The later Sigmas manufactured in Taiwan were a little suspect as to quality.

I have had this guitar from brand new which I bought in early 1980. It is a 78 or 79 model. It has held out beautifully over the years and still looks new. There have been 2 cracks in the soundboard, but I blame myself for that as I didn't take care of it when it came to humidity. Are summers are very humid and winters very dry.
It is as solid as a brick **** house! Solid Sitka Spruce top with East Indian Rosewood plywood back and sides. I am a casual player, and every time I pick it up, tune it up, it plays like the first day I bought it. If anything, it has become brighter and boomier over the years and I love it! The only thing, being a casual player is no setup or intonation was ever performed on it. I am now in the process of doing this myself and I look forward to completing it. As for "value for the money", it is worth much more than what I paid. $500 in 1980, which is about $1500 today, it is worth every bit of a $3000 to $5000 guitar today!!!

I bought one about 10 yrs ago in great condition-was told it was from 1976 ? - they do not say Sigma by Martin on Headstock- they say Sigma Guitars est 1970. Mine is from Japan and it is built beautifully and sounds great-
