STEINBERGER made the GL2 between 1983 and 2001. It has the classic minimalistic headless Steinberger design with one piece reinforced carbon fiber composite neck and body. Optional extras were a Steinberger TransTrem bridge (GL2T), white finish, 12 string configuration and left handed configuration.
The 1984 Steinberger catalog described the model as follows:
Steinberger’s premier six-string guitar, the Model GL-2 embodies all the technical practical and aesthetic advances introduced on the Steinberger Bass. Guitarists can now enjoy the exquisite balance and comfort of the renowned Steinberger “headless” design It is truly the “State of the Instrument" in an electric solid-body guitar.
Fabricated from a proprietary blend of reinforced composite materials the neck and body are molded as a single, ultra-rigid unit and provide sonic properties unknown in wooden instruments This structure isolates the vibration of the string, thereby increasing harmonic content and permitting extremely long sustain An added dividend is a neck free from the "dead spots" which plague all wooden-necked instruments. The GL-2 has unmatched brilliance. clarity and dynamics It opens up a new range of sound.
The GL-2 guitar features the revolutionary Steinberger Double Ball System which allows super fast string changes, re usability of strings and does away with sudden de-tuning due to string slippage. The system's equivalent at a 40:1 ratio enables far more precise and accurate tuning than traditional geared tuners can offer. A special provision in the guitar headpiece permits the use of conventional guitar strings as well. Equally innovative is the Steinberger fully-adjustable bridge and its unique locking mechanism. Fine adjustment of action and intonation is accomplished with a single screw for each function.
Active EMG pickups. designed to augment the extended frequency response of composite construction are at the heart of the GL-2's sophisticated electronics They are manufactured to Steinberger’s exacting specifications and are only available on our instruments Tonal variety and flexibility are provided by discrete volume and tone controls in conjunction with a three position micro toggle switch. A special phone jack will automatically accept external power via a stereo patch cord. when coupled with a phantom power supply. available from Steinberger.
A patented leg rest for seated playing attaches conveniently to the guitar body. Its compact size makes the GL-2 guitar a joy to travel with and an attractive, padded nylon case, with shoulder strap and storage pocket, houses the instrument
