Blair Iain Russell first learned guitar making in 2010 under the supervision of Stephen Hill. Following this, he studied for a year at the Newark College of Instrument making. He then set up a workshop in Bristol where he made acoustic and classical guitars to order. Blair Russell also offered, setups, repairs and one on one guitar making lessons in his workshop.  Students were guided through the complete process of constructing the guitar, starting with just blocks of wood.

Later he relocated to Berlin, Germany. His guitars are sometimes labelled "Iain Russell" and sometimes "Blair Iain Russell".
