Dan Davis was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1953. His father was a carpenter and Davis followed in his footsteps on graduation from high school, becoming a cabinetmaker for a kitchen fitting company. During this time he also attended evening classes at the University of Cincinnati and started to learn guitar. He used his wood working skills to build his first classical guitar with acceptable results. In 1978, to improve his instrument making skills, he went to study guitar making under master instrument maker Bozo Podunavac, in San Diego, California.
After completing his studies with Bozo, he stayed in California working for a large engineering and construction firm while building guitars part-time. A move to South Africa in 1981 put his guitar building on hold for a while, but he continued repairing guitars in that time. When he finally left South Africa in 1995 to return to Cincinnati he designed his new home to incorporates a guitar workshop where he now devotes as much time as possible to what he enjoys most - guitar building.
Davis specialises in custom made steel stringed guitars - both acoustic flat-top and archtop electric, featuring custom inlay work.
