During this period he was wood working in his spare time and this led to him opening a small one-man shop in Chicago in 1989 making handcrafted furniture and cabinets. In 1991 he moved his shop to Seattle where, in 1997, he began making guitars again. Since the 1970s Ethan has been performing and teaching Flamenco guitar under the stage name Mario Amaya.
