Bernd Holzgruber was born in 1939 and studied classical guitar with Karl Scheit in Vienna but is best known as a maker of classical guitars. Holzgruber was responsible for the upkeep of Scheit’s instrument collection. This afforded the opportunity to examine first hand guitars by Hermann Hauser I and Robert Bouchet, as well as historical lutes. He used this experience to construct historical instruments but is also an innovative luthier, who constantly refines his guitar designs incorporating features like lattice bracing and double-tops.
