Leigh Dovey founded PJD Guitars in 2010. The name PJD is in honour of his late father a prop maker for the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. His father passed on his knowledge of woodworking and Leigh eventually inherited his tools and small home workshop. While working as a sound and video engineer at the Royal Opera House he began making guitars in his spare time. In 2017 he moved to a bigger workshop in Leeds and devoted his efforts to hand making PJD electric guitars. His range now includes: the PJD Carey Elite, Carey Custom and Carey Standard.
