Ervin Somogyi was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1944 and moved to the USA at the age of 15. In 1966 he graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a degree in English. He made his first guitar maker in 1970 as a hobby project guided by Irving Sloane’s book. As a flamenco player his first instruments were flamenco guitars and then classical guitars - but he soon found that steel stringed acoustic guitars were the most commercially viable. Somogyi became a pioneer in the area of fine hand made acoustic guitars in a market was dominated by factory produced instruments. With over 50 years experience in making acoustic and classical guitars he has become a leading authority on their construction - he teaches classes in luthiery and publishes technical articles.
