I'm using the lates SU (8.0.15157) on Mac 10.7.4
Using the rbz I get the error: "SketchUp was unable to install the Extension you have chosen for some unknown reason."
I've tried to put the rb version into the plugins folder, but nothing was added to the Tools menu.
Same problem here

I get the same problem on a Mac - same error wording exactly.
When I try to install manually, there is no Plugins folder in the directory listed. I can create one, but then the export option fails to show up in the menu.
Someone, please help!
Can't install plug-in

I get exactly the same error message, on a Mac.
Additionally, when I try to install the rb version manually, there is no "plugins" folder in the location specified. I can create one, but the extension fails to show up.
Someone, please help!

This was on Mac OSX. I created the plugins folder FIRST, then used the import command from the Preferences. This worked to install the plugin.
Perhaps there's something preventing the creation of a 'Plugins' folder. Not sure.
Thanks!

The solution worked for me.
