I own this guitar. It is the finest Fender acoustic that I have come upon. The sound is bright with depth. The action and intonation are true. I have received numerous compliments on the sound and, when I have let other players play it, on the action. The overtones are rich and varied. I have generally found Fender's acoustics to be discount guitars, mostly for beginners, but this instrument is a fine guitar. Fender calls this a dreadnought but the instrument has round shoulders and not the squared shoulders of the traditional dreadnought. It does, however, have the depth of a dreadnought and my wife plays it in concert and in bluegrass jams and it holds it own. She is playing it on this tune but I'm not sure it can be distinguished amoungst the other bluegrass intruments.

Solid East Indian Rosewood back and sides. Appears to be resonably tight SItka or Adarondack Spruce top. Modified Dred shape with pinched waist area and rounded shoulders. One piece Mahogany neck with Rosewood headplate. Bracing is X - NON scalloped - and actually thick 5/16 with a forward shift. Neck joint appears to be mortise - not a bolt on - with a solid block with support under the fretboard extension over the top towards the sound hole.
Definitely a well made bright sounding guitar due to the thinner Spruce top. Fingerstyle is easy with this configuration giving lots of sound with a light touch. But the thicker bracing gives a solid support to the top allowing strumming with fingers or pick where you can dig in for a rich volumn without any breakdown of the sound. Nut width is 1 3/4". Saddle and nut are plastic along with pins. A bone saddle is recommended as it gives a bit more depth to the sound. Plastic pins are fine depending upon your taste.
Strings should be the Light variety. The Elixer Lights work very well here. The Bronze strings really give a very bright sound - too bright for me. But the Phosphore Bronze hit the sweet spot. Action set up is good, but the saddle could be lowered a bit - an relatively easy job.
Interesting point - the Yamaha LL16 is almost identical to the 1100 SX. Body and neck dimensions - scale - are identical. Internal bracing patterns match, with the Yamaha having additional "corner" supports connecting the back to the top. LL16 also uses an Engelmann Spruce top with a large "C" block for the neck joint (mortise type) and extension support.
If you can find either of these two guitars used in very good condition at a fair price - grab it. Make sure to hydrate your guitars during the heating season.
