Fender's line of bolt-on neck acoustics was introduced in 1963 and production lasted until around 1970. These guitars were Fender's first attempt at making their own acoustics and had Stratocaster style necks attached by bolts through the body with a neck plate - just like Fender's electric guitars. They also had a one inch aluminum internal support rod through the body - which earned them the nickname "broomstick". The designer was Roger Rossmeisl (1927 - 1979) - son of German luthier Wenzel Rossmeisl. Roger emigrated to the USA in 1952 and worked briefly with Gibson before a stint with Rickenbacker where he introduced the "German Carve" and some of that company's most iconic designs including the Combo 650, Combo 850 and the 4000 Bass. Rossmeisl came to Leo Fender in 1962 with the concept of a series of bolt-on necked acoustic guitars and the first four the series (the King, Concert, Classic, and Folk models) were introduced in 1963. The King model was the top of the line - its name was changed to Kingman in 1966. Through the 1960s further models were added including the Malibu and Newporter as well as the 12-string Shenandoah and Villager models. There was even a Wildwood version of the Kingman.
Some of the model names of these guitars have been reissued by Fender for later acoustic guitar lines.
