Jaco Pastorius' best known bass was his sunburst-finish fretless Jazz Bass nicknamed the Bass of Doom, which had had its frets removed. Pastorius finished the fretboard with marine epoxy to protect the wood from the round wound Rotosound Swing 66 strings he used. Pastorius' bass was heavily distressed and was repaired several times, by the mid-1980s it had literally fallen to pieces leading to a rebuild. The Fender Custom Shop cooperated with Pastorius' technician to create a meticulous re creation of Pastorius’ bass: the Custom Shop Artist Series Tribute bass. This model (#0196108) includes all the scratches, dents and screw holes, a select alder body, specially shaped maple neck, epoxy-coated fretless rosewood fingerboard and knurled chrome Precision Bass control knobs
