The violin shaped Gibson EB (electric bass) debuted in 1953 and it was known as simply the Gibson Electric Bass until it was renamed the EB-1 in 1958. There was another model that was simply referred to as the EB in the 1970 Gibson catalog. It had an SG shaped body and was described as follows in the 1970 catalog:

EB—SOLlD BODY. This exciting new addition to the Gibson line meets all professional standards at a very popular price. The custom contoured double cutaway design makes for smooth, easy playing.

The Gibson Electric Bass, was first introduced in 1953 as a response to the successful the Fender Precision Bass. The body design was based on a double bass with f-holes painted on. As a concession to upright bass players, the EB-1 had a telescopic end pin spike that allowed bassists to play the EB-1 in the upright position It was made until 1958 when it was replaced first by the EB-2 and then by the EB-0. The Electric Bass was renamed as the EB-1 in 1958 (from 1953 to 1958 it was simply the Gibson Electric Bass), to separate it from the newly introduced EB-2.

The Gibson EB-2 was a semi-hollow bodied ES-335 style bass introduced in 1958. The EB-2 was discontinued in 1961 but was back in production by 1964.

GIBSON discontinued the ES-335 shaped EB-2 in 1961, but it was soon back in production from 1964 to 1972 when 335 style guitars were becoming popular. These later models had right angle tuners (replacing the banjo style on the pre 1961 models) also a bridge mute (from 1960 on), two pickup option (the EB-2D) from 1966 onwards, cherry finish option (from 1965 onwards).

There were several model name variations depending on the number of pickups and the finish color. They were:

EB-2: Single pickup, Sunburst finish

Gibson introduced the EB-2D bass in 1966. It was like the existing EB-2 model but had a mini-humbucker in the bridge position (like the EB-3). The EB-2D had separate volume and tone controls and a 3-way pickup selector switch and a baritone switch. Originally offered in cherry red or sunburst finish, sparkling burgundy and walnut finishes were options from 1969 onwards. This model was discontinued in 1972 but the 2012 Gibson Midtown Standard bass is loosely based on the EB-2D.

The Gibson EB-3 was made between 1961 and 1979.
