The Gibson Alvin Lee signature model is based on Lee's 1959 ES-335 "Big Red", with its replacement '60s block inlay slim taper neck and  extra single coil pickup in the center position. This guitar was immortalised on film when Alvin Lee played at Woodstock with Ten Years After and Gibson have reproduced it carefully including the stickers and faded cherry finish. The pickups on this guitar are two classic '57 humbuckers without covers (Alvin Lee took off the covers on the original to improve the tone) and a single coil Seymour Duncan.

GIBSON manufactured the ES ARTIST ACTIVE between 1979 and 1986

The Gibson ES-100 was made between 1938 and 1941, it was a small, basic, entry level hollow bodied electric archtop. The ES-100 intiially had a blade pickup, this was replaced by a pickup with adjustable pole pieces in 1940. This model was reintroduced in 1946 as the ES-125

The ES-120 T was made between 1961 and 1970. The ES-120 TD was the two pickup version.

GIBSON manufactured the ES-125 T between 1956 and 1969 - it was a thinline version of the ES-125.

Gibson made this three-quarter sized version of the ES-125T from 1957 until 1970. This guitar had the same thinline 1.75" body depth as the full sized ES-125T, and a single P-90 pickup.

GIBSON manufactured the ES-125 TC between 1960 and 1970. The ES-125 TC is a single Florentine cutaway version of the thinline ES-125 T. This model had a single P-90 pickup. A two pickup version (the ES-125 TDC) was also available.

The ES-140 3/4 archtop was introduced in 1950 as a scaled down version of the ES-175. It was not 3/4 of the size of the ES-175 but around 90% of the size (the 3/4 refers to the naming convention from the violin family of instruments). The 22.75 inch scale length was well suited to those with smaller hands, younger beginners or those looking for a more compact traveling instrument. The pickup was a single Gibson P-90. The full thickness body version was made until 1957 - when it was replaced by a thinline version, the ES-140T which was made until 1968.

The Gibson ES-140T thinline archtop was introduced in 1956 - replacing the deeper bodied ES-140 which had been made since 1950. The single P-90 pickup ES-140T was a three-quarter sized thinline version of the Gibson ES-175, designed for younger players or those with otherwise small hands. Like the ES-175 it had an all maple laminate body and mahogany neck. This model was discontinued in the late 1960s.

In 1935, Gibson enlisted musician Alvino Rey to help develop a prototype pickup with engineers at the Chicago Lyon & Healy Co. Later that year, the project was moved to Gibson's factory where Walter Fuller finalised the distinctive hexagonal design. The new pickup was first used on a 1935 lap steel model. The pickup was put on an F-hole archtop guitar, called the ES-150 (ES - Electric Spanish). The first ES-150 shipped from the Gibson factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on May 20, 1936.

GIBSON made the ES-150 DC between 1969 and 1975. It was a double cut-away shaped like an ES-335 but with a 3 inch deep hollow body and a master volume control. Gibson discontinued this model in 1975 after making a total of 2,427 guitars.

The ES-165 Herb Ellis Plus (ARHE+) was introduced in 2001

The Gibson ES-175 is an archtop electric introduced by Gibson in 1949. The ES-175 was designed to be a cheaper alternative to Gibson's high-end archtop models like the L5 and Super 400. Partly for this reason the ES-175 has an all-laminate body construction. The earliest ES-175s cost $175 (hence the name) and had one single-coil P-90 pickup in the neck position. In 1953, the ES-175D, a two-pickup version, was introduced. The ES-175 came in either natural or sunburst finish. From 1957 ES-175s were fitted with PAF humbucking pickups.

Manufacture of the ES-175 D-AN (ES75-AN) began in 2000

The Gibson ES-175CC is a version of the ES-175 equipped with a Charlie Christian pickup made between 1978 and 1981. Gibson announced the arrival of the ES-175CC as follows in their promotional material:

"Few guitars in their basic form have proved as popular as the ES-175 Gibson. The ES-175D is an immensely popular guitar among rock and country players as well as jazz artists. Easy action and that famous Gibson neck maintain this. Now Gibson have  released the 175 CC, a guitar that is bound to make its presence felt.  

Gibson introduced the ES-175T in 1976. It was a thin-bodied version of the Gibson ES-175 but it was made for only three years and discontinued in 1979. It came in sunburst, natural or wine red finishes.

The ES-225 T was made between 1955 and 1959. It was the first thinline Gibson hollow bodied guitar. The ES-225 T featuried a Florentine cutaway, the Les Paul combined bridge and tailpiece a laminated pickguard, and a single P-90 pickup mounted in an unusual position mid-way between the bridge and the end of the fingerboard. Around 5,220 of the single pickup ES-225 were produced.

Gibson introduced the thinline hollowbody ES-225 in 1955 as the ES-225T. The ES-225 had a  Florentine cutaway, Les Paul wraparound combined bridge and tailpiece, a laminated pickguard, and a single P-90 pickup mounted mid-way between the bridge and fingerboard.

GIBSON manufactured the ES-240 between 1977 and 1978. According to The Gibson Book, only 3 were shipped. They probably thought that it was too close to the ES-347, and so decided to drop off the ES-240. It's the pre-ES-347, with coil tap switch, and stop tailpiece (back then the ES-335 had a trapeze stock tailpiece).

GIBSON made the ES-250 between 1938 and 1940. It was based on the ES-150 but had a larger body, more refined fingerboard and fancier appointments and hardware (like deluxe headstock, tuners and tailpiece). The ES-250 had a Charlie Christian pickup - with separate blades for each string and a large magnet that continues under the soundboard.  The Gibson ES-250 was a short lived model - only 70 were made, and the model was soon replaced by the ES-300.

Production of the Gibson ES-295 began in 1952 and ended in 1958. The ES-295 was used by rock and roll legend Scotty Moore, who backed Elvis Presley on the early Sun recordings. The ES-295 had 2 single coil pickups until 1958 when humbuckers were standard. The raised white pickguard bears an etched flower design.

The ES-295 is currently available as part of the Gibson Historic Series Collection.

When the Gibson ES-300 was introduced in 1940 it had the Gibson long diagonal pickup a single 6.5 inches long pickup that stretched diagonally from the bridge to the neck. This pickup had a tortoiseshell like plastic cover and was mounted diagonally extending from the fingerboard on the bass side to the bridge on the treble side, with two pairs of magnets underneath.

Production of the ES-320 TD began in 1971 and ended in 1975

GIBSON produced the ES-325 TD between 1972 and 1979

The Gibson ES-330 T was made between 1959 and 1963. It was the single pickup version of the fully hollow-bodied thinline ES-330TD. Somewhat unusually, the ES-330T had its single pickup mounted halfway between the bridge and the end of the neck, not in one of the usual neck or bridge positions.Some changes were made to the specifications in 1962:  block fingerboard inlays replaced the dots inlays and the pickup was changed from a black plastic P-90 to a chrome covered unit.

GIBSON produced the ES-330 TD between 1959 and 1975. Since then, it has been reissued from time to time by Gibson's Custom Shop.

Introduced in 2003, the Gibson ES-333 is similar to the Gibson ES-335, but with several differences: a thin satin finish, a silkscreen headstock Gibson logo with no inlays, bound fingerboard, the pickups are Gibson type 490R and 498T, versus the ES-335's Gibson 57 Classic pickups. the back of the body has an access cover for the electronics, versus the solid rear of the ES-335. As a modified but cheaper, satin-finished ES-335  the ES-333s were a great deal, but were discontinued around 2005.

Production of the Gibson ES-335 TD DOT began in 1981 when it replaced the Gibson ES-335 model. The Gibson ES-335 Dot was a reissue of the 1960 Gibson ES-335 model with dot inlays. The Gibson ES-335 Dot was replaced in 1991 by the Gibson ES-335 REISSUE model.

GIBSON introduced the ES-335 LARRY CARLTON SIGNATURE model in 2002. The ES-335 Larry Carlton was based on Carlton's own 1969 Gibson ES-335. Intially it was made only during 2002, but it was later reintroduced in 2004. Gibson closely copied Larry's guitar including the non-standard positioning of the bridge and tailpiece (tailpiece is slightly further back than usual) and the single piece slim taper mahogany neck. Available in Heritage Cherry Sunburst, Pelham Blue, or Vintage Sunburst. It has a unique "Mr 335" truss rod cover.

GIBSON made the ES-335 PRO between 1979 and 1981. The ES-335 Pro had two uncovered high-output Dirty Finger humbuckers and came in Antique Sunburst or Cherry Red finish with chrome plated hardware. Gibson described the ES-335 Pro as follows (in 1979):

The Gibson ES-335 Studio was first made between 1987 and 1994. It was just like the Gibson ES-335 but without any f-holes - like a plainer version of the BB King Lucille model.

In 2013 Gibson released a stripped down ES-335 Studio model with a single Dirty Fingers Plus humbucker, baked maple fingerboard and two controls only, a trapeze tailpiece and a plastic cover over the place where the neck pickup was.

GIBSON produced the ES-340 TD between 1969 and 1974 and also in 1978. The ES 340 was like the ES-335 but had a different wiring scheme and a 3 piece maple neck.

The ES-345 TD was made between 1959 and 1982

GIBSON manufactured the ES-347 TD between 1978 and 1991. This ES-335 style thinline semi-hollow body had a coil tap switch, block markers on an ebony fretboard, fine tuning tailpiece and, on earlier models, a brass nut. The ES-347 TD had a somewhat brightner tone and better sustain than most other Gibson ES guitars - due to the brass nut and they way the bridge was mounted on two 5/8" brass studs. Pickups were intially two high output Series VII Super Humbuckers but were changed to "Dirty fingers" humbuckers during the 1980s..

GIBSON made the ES-350 between 1947 and 1956

In 1955 Gibson introduced a group short scale length (23.5 inches), thin-bodied electric guitars suited to players who wanted a smaller, more comfortable and lighter instrument. This group inlcuded three guitars: Byrdland (the top of the range), the mid-range ES-350T, and the bottom of the range ES-225T.

GIBSON produced the ES-355 TD/ES-335 TDSV between 1958 and 1970

The Gibson ES-775 is one of Gibson's lesser known archtops. The Gibson ES-775 was introduced in 1990 as a much fancier version of the ES-175, with upgrades including an ebony fingerboard and knobs, gold hardware, multi-bound headstock, deeper cutaway, trapeze tailpiece with ebony insert and slotted block fingerboard inlays. The neck pickup is moved right next to the end of the fingerboard to get a even mellower jazz tone than on the ES-175.
