The first Thunderbolt/Flying Z guitar was a custom instrument made from Gibson Flying V parts. The Flying-Z was not a Gibson design but was comissioned as part of a April Fool's spoof article for the UK "The Guitar" magazine in the early 1990s. The korina body looks like a Flying V with its upper winglet removed, reversed and reattached (giving a shape like a Z). The string though tailpiece is a custom made Z shaped one. The rest of the guitar is otherwise standard Flying V. Gibson themselves made some copies of this design in the late1990s, as did Hamer and Fernandes.
