The Gibson Joe Perry Boneyard model was conceived by Perry's wife Billie while they were visiting Gibson's Custom Shop in Nashville. Billie conspired with Gibson to secretly build a guitar with a highly flamed "tiger stripe" maple top and a unique finish she called "green tiger." She presented it to Joe for Christmas 2002. Perry liked the guitar so much he immediately added it to his working collection - "The prototype is always two feet away from me down in the studio," he said at the time.

With a few additional modifications to make it a truly personal instrument, the guitar that started out as a gift became a Gibson Custom Shop model. "Joe Perry's guitar work has been a defining element of rock and roll music for the last three decades, and Joe's personal taste is reflected in every element of the Gibson Joe Perry guitar," said Henry Juszkiewicz, chairman and CEO of Gibson Guitar Corp. "Holding this instrument is like shaking hands with a rock legend." In addition to the distinctive top finish, the guitar sports Perry's "Boneyard" logo on the headstock, which is the name of his home recording studio. Perry's specifications also include a neck with a thicker profile than the standard Gibson neck and a pickup that is wired in reverse to add a distinctive "edge" to the tone of the guitar.

The Joe Perry Boneyard Les Paul has a highly figured carved maple top, with a custom “Green Tiger” finish in nitrocellulose lacquer with vintage cream binding. The hardware is aged nickel finish, tuners are Kluson-style tulip-button units. The headstock has a mother-of-pearl “Boneyard” headstock inlay and truss-rod cover engraved with Joe Perry’s signature. It comes with a Tune-o-matic (ABR-1) bridge and stopbar tailpiece as standard but there is a Bigsby vibrato option. Pickups are a BurstBucker 2 in the neck and a slightly hotter BurstBucker 3 in the bridge. The neck pickup has been wired reverse-polarity for out-of-phase tones in the middle position.

Best guitar I've ever played. Through my Mesa Boogie Roadster I can cover every type of tone with this guitar. I plan to have it creamated with me when I go. From blues to Serious hard rock this axe can do it all. Les Paul's are a great design, but add this top and the worn looking hardware, the burstbucker pick ups create the perfect storm. I've played all over California with this guitar and the Gibson quality shines through. A bit pricy but to own a legends tool but to feel the confidence that come along with playing this guitar I'd purchase it again. Life is short if your considering getting one of these don't hesitate. DO IT!!!

I have the Gibson Les Paul Joe Perry Boneyard, number Bone002 and it's my be all, end all guitar. 10 OUT OF 10, friends, utter Perfection. It sounds better than any les paul I've ever played BY FAR! So warm, thick and massive and it plays like butter. Think Slash's November Rain solos or Sweet Child intro. The neck is huge! Baseball bat indeed. Took me a bit to adjust to the neck size but now I don't even think about it, and I think that in it's neck size lies the secrets to it's unbelievable mojo sound. It's NOT a shredder guitar by any stretch! This is a MAN'S TOOL, a machine built for maximum tone with a Custom Shop fit and finish second to none. DON'T LET ANYONE TELL YOU THEY'RE NOT WORTH THE MONEY!! And the color is something you have to see in person to understand. Through my Marshall and Fender Tub amps, it's a guitar of a Greek God and could easily become a tool of the Devil. Oh and the reverse polarity "Peter Green Mod" took me some time to dial in but once I did it's a trip. Hint, center position with both volumes on 5, bridge tone at 0 and neck tone at 10, gives you a crazy horn-ish slight auto wah sound. Our affair is very serious people! It's a till death do us part kind-of-thing for me.
