GIBSON L-4 CES (early models)

The Gibson L-4 CES was the electric version of the Gibson L-4 with a carved top and a florentine cutaway. Very few electrified L-4s were made during the 1950s, but in 1958 20 instruments were made bearing the L-4 CES model name. They were custom orders available from 1958 onwards. Being a custom order model there were various pickup configurations: some had Charlie Christian pickups, others had Gibson alnico single coils, some had Gibson humbuckers.

GIBSON L-4 CES (MAHOGANY)

The Gibson L-4 CES Mahogany was introduced around 1989 as part of Gibson's Custom Shop Carved Top Series. The Gibson L-4 CES had been around since the 1950s but was only ever produced in very small numbers to order. The L-4 CES looks like the ES-175 but has a solid spruce carved top and solid mahogany back and sides.

GIBSON L-5 CES

The L-5 was introduced as an acoustic in 1922 by Lloyd Loar, and was the first Gibson guitar with f-holes. In the 1940s the big sounding L-5 was the guitar of  choice for big band players. In 1951 Gibson electrified the L-5 with a pair of P-90 pickups and the L-5 CES model was born, although it was initially labeled the L-5 SEC. The L-5 CES had a solid spruce top and solid maple rims (unlike the laminated bodied ES-5) - apart from the electronics, the construction was identical to the L-5. In 1958 the P-90 pickups were changed to two humbuckers.

GIBSON L-5 S

The L-5 S was made between 1972 and 1985, it was a solid-body version of the Gibson L-5 hollowbody. It had multiple binding on the single-cutaway body, neck, and headstock, and an ebony fingerboard with block inlays. The headstock inlay was a flower-pot similar to the L-5 archtop. Although initially the L5S models had the L-5 trapeze tailpiece, from 1975-1976 they had stop-bar tailpieces and from 1976 to 1985 TP-6 fine-tuning tailpieces.

GIBSON L-5 STUDIO

The Gibson L-5 Studio was a no-frills version of the L-5, without the fancy bindings, inlays and hardware. The Gibson L-5 Studio was made by the Gibson Custom Shop between 1996 and 2000 - relatively few were made in total.
