GIBSON introduced the LES PAUL DC STANDARD (LPS2) in 1998. The Les Paul DC Standard is a double cutaway version of the arched-top Les Paul with two humbucker pickups, similar to the Hamer DC design from the 1970s. The DC Standard has 24 frets, single master volume and tone controls and '60s-style slim taper neck profile. Some suggest that these newer 24-fret carved top doublecut Les Pauls were Gibson's response to the success of PRS in the 1990s. The mahogany bodies on the Les Paul DC Standard were chambered for weight relief and capped with carved figured AAA maple tops. Production of this model ceased during 2000 and resumed again in 2001

I owned one of these back in the late-‘90s and later foolishly sold it. Just recently I found a ‘98 in Amber (just like my old one) but with chrome or nickel instead of gold hardware. This is without a doubt my favorite Les Paul, or Gibson in general for that matter, that I’ve ever owned. The tone is to die for & I believe part of that comes from the chambered body. I can dial in a jazzier tone than I’m able to with any of my other Les Pauls but this thing can kick out nearly any rock style you could ask for. The guitar is lightweight & super comfy, has a slim ‘’60s neck & a belly carve, and the AAA maple top looks like a million bucks. Gibson hit the mail on the head with this model

These guitars are amazing. I have been looking for one for a while when one found it's way to me in a trade deal. After hooking it up to my Boogie I instantly bonded with this guitar and regretted not getting one of these bad boys years ago. It has that amazing Les Paul tone and sizzle, and The 24 frets make this thing over the top. I would recommend buying one of the first year models. I think with the years to come these could be very valuable as well. 5 stars and 2 thumbs up.

I own a LSP2 Plus in Hot tamale red and gold hardware (1998). It is an absolute tone monster, less fat neck profile, light weight and plays effortlessly. The new modern style cut isn't nearly as attractive, or presently, affordable. This will likely change in the future given today's player. The modern player seems to value a guitar for its quality rather than player recognition. I've noticed that the days of admiring a guitar simply because a certain entertainer or its age is dwindling. I'm sure late 90s isn't considered vintage, but the quality is there in respect to this model. It is just a matter of time until this model excels in value.
