GIBSON made the THE PAUL II between 1996 and 1998. The original The Paul of the late 1970s was Gibson's first no-frills guitar with all the essential features of a Les Paul. The next-generation The Paul II added the elegance of a carved top and a lacquer finish while retaining the affordability associated with the name The Paul. Pickups were 490R Alnico magnet humbucker in the neck (rhythm) position and in the bridge (treble) position a 498T Alnico magnet humbucker
