Guild produced two waves of Red Special replicas. The first was the 1984 BHM1 model followed almost ten years later by the BM01 (Signature/Pro) model and the BM02 and BM03 variants.
GUILD BRIAN MAY (BHM1)Guild produced the BRIAN MAY model between 1984 and 1988. It was a faithful copy of Brian May's Red Special guitar. Features include a unique switching and control system, a wide but comfortable neck and an interior hollow acoustic chamber. It came with a Deluxe Kahler Vibrato and the three single coil pickups are DiMarzio replications of the original Burns Tri-sonics. There was a choice of all mahogany body or mahogany body with flamed maple top. All were handmade in the USA and left handed configuration was an option.
GUILD BRIAN MAY PROThe Guild Brian May Pro model was Guild's second faithful reproduction of Brian May's Red Special. It is identical to the BM01 Signature model except without the signature decal on the headstock.
GUILD BRIAN MAY SIGNATURE (BM01)The Guild Brian May Signature model was Guild's second faithful reproduction of Brian May's Red Special. Made in 1994 only as a limited edition of 1000 instruments. The pickups were Seymour Duncan reproduction Burn's Tri-Sonics. The tremolo and bridge system are custom made by Schaller and are more accurate reproduction of Red Special than the Kahler units seen on the earlier Guild BHM1 model.
GUILD BRIAN MAY SPECIAL (BM02)GUILD produced the BRIAN MAY SPECIAL between 1994 and 1995. It is a more budget version of the BM01 model. It has a tun-o-matic bridge with stop tailpiece instead of the Brian May vibrato seen on the BM01. The pickup spacing is different - the bridge and middle pickups are next to each other like a humbucker. The fingerboard is rosewood instead of the ebony on the BM01 and the finish color is natural.
GUILD BRIAN MAY STANDARD (BM03)The BRIAN MAY STANDARD (BM03) was made between 1994 and 1995. The Standard has the same body and headstock shape as the Red Special but the similarity ends there. The fretboard is rosewood, the body is completely solid with no sound chambers with no binding on the body. The multiple sliding switches of the Red Special are gone, replaced by a pickup selector switch and coil tap switch . The Standard came with various pickup options: 3 single coils, 2 humbuckers with coil taps and 1 single coil 1 humbucker. |
