IBANEZ JEM SERIES

The Ibanez JEM is an electric guitar first introduced in 1987 and is the signature model of its co-designer Steve Vai. The Ibanez JEM series design evolved out of the superstrat era of the early 1980s where the emphasis was on humbucking pickups. big frets, fast necks and locking tremolos.

After the JEM series was launched at the 1987 NAMM show, Ibanez worked with Steve Vai on the subsequent JEM design variations. For example Vai specified that DiMarzio pickups for all his JEM guitars. The naming system of the JEM models(JEMxxx) involves numbers -although there is no clear system. The letters in the model names, however, always indicate the color pattern used (JEM777LNG > LochNess Green). However, it is known that the number 7 came from Steve Vai himself as he likes the number 7.

IBANEZ JEM555

The Ibanez JEM555 was introduced in 1994 as a more affordable version of the JEM - the JEM555s usually have "JEM Jr." on the headstock. The JEM555 was initially made in Korea (instead of Japan) and then in Indonesia from 2008 onwards. The hardware and parts used on JEM555s are somtimes lower quality than those used on Japanese JEMs. For example they tend to have whatever tremolo is used on non-Japanese made RG models of their production year (so the early ones had Lo-TRS II bridges). The pickups used on this model, however, are DiMarzio Evolutions - like the Japanese JEMs.

IBANEZ JEM77 BFP (Blue Floral Pattern)

IBANEZ made the JEM77 BFP (Blue Floral Pattern) between 1991 and 1996. The Ibanez JEM77 BFP (Blue Floral Pattern) was part of the Steve Vai signature JEM series and was notable for its blue floral pattern covered body and blue vine fingerboard inlay. While the original floral pattern JEM (the JEM77 FP model) was covered in floral fabric before being clear coated, the JEM77 BFP had a paper printed pattern glued to the body and headstock before clear coating. The JEM77 BFP had two DiMarzio PAF Pro humbuckers and a DiMarzio single coil. The bridge was a Lo Pro Edge tremolo.

Ibanez JEM77P BFP

In 2011 Ibanez reissued the JEM77 BFP model as the Indonesian made Premium Series JEM77P BFP - selling for around half the price of Japanese JEMs. This new model has a different floral pattern: darker, with fewer and much larger flowers. The bridge and pickups are also a change from the original as the JEM77P BFP has an Ibanez Edge II Zero tremolo and different DiMarzio pickups: Gravity Storm humbuckers and an Evolution single-coil,
