The Ibanez ST9 Super Tube Screamer overdrive pedal was introduced in 1984 and made for around a year. It was designed as an improved version of the TS9 model and had an extra mid-boost control, with a slightly thicker, sweeter layer of distortion. Sales of the original TS9 had been disappointing in the USA so the ST9 was only distributed in Europe. For this reason the ST9s are rarer than the TS9s. The ST9s were made by Maxon for Ibanez.

The Ibanez TS-9 is one of the Tube Screamer series of overdrive pedals. Designed to recreate the sound of a vintage tube amp, the TS-9 has three control knobs: drive, tone knob, and level. The drive knob is for gain, the tone knob adjusts treble and the level knob adjusts the overall output volume. The TS-9 was introduced in 1982 as part of the Ibanez 9-series. Internally it is very similar to the TS-808 pedal, but the TS-9 has a much larger footswitch. The TS-9 also has a different output circuit to the TS-808 making it slightly brighter. The original TS-9 was discontinued in 1984.

The original Ibanez TS-9 was discontinued in 1984. But by the early 1990s used TS-9s were selling for 100s of dollars - so it was no surprise when in 1992 Ibanez decided to reissue the TS-9. Although there was some resistance to this idea within Ibanez company a stubborn brand manager managed to make it happen and within weeks of its re-release 5,000 TS9s had been sold.The reissues are a faithful copy of the original pedals.

The TS9DX was released in 1998 building on the popularity of the reissued TS9. The TS9DX has the same circuit as the TS9 but has a 4-way rotary mode switch which allows you to tweak some parameters of the circuit allowing the player a wider variety of Tube Screamer sonic characteristics. The four modes are as follows: TS9 mode : straight TS9 sound; + mode : A bit louder than a TS9, less distorted more low-mid range and fewer highs. HOT mode : less distortion than + mode, with more volume and low end. TURBO mode : even more volume and bass
