MARTIN 0 (CONCERT) SERIES

Martin size 0 or concert sized guitars are around 13.5 inches wide, narrower than the size 00 but also slightly deeper than the 00 with a maximum body depth of 4.25 inches (14 fret models) to 4.19 inches (12 fret models). According to Martin the size 0 is designed for concert playing and club use (size 00 is designed for extra volume) and is the most favored size combining great brillancy with clearness. Martin was consistent over the years in the size 0 being their favorite guitar when volume was not the most important criterion.

MARTIN 0-15

The Martin 0-15 was an all-mahogany instrument with modest styling. It was made mainly between 1940 and 1961, although a few may have been made in the 1930s. Its humble appearance means it has been largely overlooked by collectors and good vintage 0-15s can be bought for a relatively reasonable prices. The Martin 0-15 has Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, bridge and headstock veneer. The all mahogany body means that the tone is also restrained not too much bass or treble. The was also a tenor guitar (4 string) version the Martin 0-15T.

MARTIN 0-16NY

MARTIN made the 0-16NY between 1961 and 1995. Shaped in the authentic “New York Martin” style, the concert sized Martin 0-16NY joins a quarter sawn mahogany body with a resonant spruce top trimmed in black and white inlay. Finished in natural semi-gloss lacquer, the 0-16NY combines a rosewood fingerboard with a rosewood bridge. Braced for (light!) steel or nylon strings, the 0-16NY is considered an ideal finger picking folk guitar because of its soft mellow sound and wide neck.

MARTIN 0-18T

Martin introduced the 0-18T tenor guitar in the late 1920s. At this time banjos were a popular rhythm instrument because they were loud enough to be heard over the other dance band instruments. Tenor guitars were aimed at banjoists who wanted to switch to guitar - they had four strings and the same tuning as a banjo but sounded like a guitar. The 0-18T even had banjo tuners for the first couple of years of production. The 0-18T remained in prodcution until 1994 although in later years it was made to order only.

MARTIN 0-21

Martin first began producing the 0-21 way back in 1898. The concert sized 0-21 was the smallest body sized version of the Martin style 21 flat-tops. They had 19 frets and the neck joined the body at the 12th fret. The earliest ones had cedar necks until mahogany necks were introduced in 1917. They had also ebony fingerboards until 1941 and then rosewood until the 0-21 model was discontinued .

MARTIN 0-28K

The Martin 0-28K was made between 1917 and 1935. It was an all koa steel stringed version of the Martin 0-28. The koa tops were used in part because of a belief at the time that spruce soundboards could not withstand the force of steel strings. Makers like Martin noted the use of koa & steel strings on Hawaiian made instruments and followed suit. Total production of the model was 641 were made in total. The 0-28K, at least until 1929, had the bridge set up in such a way that it could be easily converted between Hawaiian and Spanish configurations by simply raising the nut.
