MARTIN initially made the 000-42 between 1918 and 1943 only. The style 42 models were one level below the top of the range 45 models. The style 42s had mother of pearl inlay on their tops (but not on the back and sides like the style 45). The 000 indicates that this model was the largest body size of the style 42s - a grand auditorium body size.

Eric Clapton played a 1939 Martin 000-42 for much of the live performance recorded for the MTV Unplugged series in 1992. The popularity of Clapton's Unplugged performance is led to Martin reissuing the 000-42 model. With a shorter scale length and wide neck width the 000-42 is popular with fingerstyle players
