Martin introduced the D-1 dreadnought acoustic in 1993 as part of their 1 Series. The D-1 is an affordable traditional solid wood guitar in the spirit of the Style 15 and Style 17 models that Martin introduced during The Great Depression. The Dreadnought design (refined by Martin in the early-1900s) was first produced in 1931 bearing the Martin brand name. The first two models were named the D-1 and D-2 that soon became the legendary D-18 and D-28 models.

The initial Martin One Series D-1 was made from 1993 to 2006. The Martin D-1 model was reintroduced from 2009 until around 2012 but with some changes: the rosewood fingerboard and bridge was changed to a morado fingerboard and bridge on these later models (a similar feel to rosewood but slightly lighter looking). The later models had Stratabond necks (a type of multilaminate) and solid sapele back and sides (the 1993-2006 models had mahogany necks, laminated mahogany sides and solid mahogany backs). The pickguard was changed from tortoiseshell to black on these later D-1s and a slightly different top bracing pattern was used.

2012£800newNot absolutely sure of the year. I think this had been in the shop for a while. It's the later model with stratabond neck and morado bridge/fretboard. I played everything in the shop - Taylor, Gibson, Washburn, Takamine, Yamaha - this was the stand out instrument by far.

Great sounding (generation 2) guitar if you can find it! Although some may complain about the “funny feeling” stratabond neck, it’s really not that bad once you get used to it. Sounds great, plays great. Awesome bang for the buck all solid-wood USA-made Martin!!! Highly recommended if you can find it, or, it’s cousin, the D1-GT (gloss top)

2nd hand for £800.What a steal it is too. 06/07 so played in. It has a wonderful, mature, sweet sound with crystal clear highs. Not sure how much new but wouldn't sell mine for£1500. The older ones are all wood, all in all=superb!

I gave this 5 stars because it has earned it. You get an excellent guitar (Made in USA) for the price of a cheaper guitar. It stays in tune really well and has a HUGE sound, it is also one of the loudest acoustics I have heard. The guitar is no longer in production as a D-1, it changed to a DX-1 which was made in Mexico and it may be discontinued as well.
