Private equity firm Bain Capital has just bought out Guitar Center (including the online retailer Musicians Friend) for $2.1 billion. Guitar Center is one of the leading retailers of musical instruments in the U.S. Stockholders will get $63.00 in cash for each share of Guitar Center common stock they own.

Private equity firms are big news in the U.K. at the moment, by offsetting any profits with overseas debts they are getting away with paying little or no taxes. A house of commons committee put it to one private equity boss that he was pay less tax than his office cleaning lady!

Les Paul coffee table

Les Paul coffe table

This guitar coffee table was made by self taught metal artist Timothy Adam from Grand Rapids in Michigan. It is an oversized handmade version of a Les Paul around 5 feet long, 2 feet wide and 18 inches high. Made from mild steel it has a blue tinted clear coat.

The Les Paul table in the picture was sold to Barneys department store in New York in May, but Timothy can make you a custom order in any style from fender to the flying V.

With prices at $3,100 it might be cheaper to put your coffee mug on a real Les Paul!

The ad was for a Robert Johnson tablature book by Hal Leonard, and you can plainly see that they have airbrushed Johnson’s cigarette out of the book cover.

Merry axemas

It’s that time of year again – when we get the box of Christmas decorations out of the attic and see if the lights still work. It’s also a time when guitar heroes climb into the attic of rock, and rummage in the dusty box of Christmas tunes for a seasonal hit.

When it comes to festive guitar albums, Merry Axemas (released in 1997) and Merry Axemas 2 (from 2005) are the shiniest baubles on the Christmas tree of rock. Merry Axemas was conceived by Steve Vai and features eleven ninties guitar heros. Vai said at the time,

Guitar tablature: OLGA is this goodbye?

guitar site traffic

OLGA (On-line Guitar Archive) a venerable library of guitar and bass tablature has been shut down. It has been around for years, used by a generation of learner guitar players. OLGA has been taken down by legal action twice before, in 1996 and 1998, but recovered. This time it looks serious, the site has been down for a few months already.
