AMPEG AUB-1

AMPEG manufactured the AUB-1 between 1966 and 1969. It was the fretless version of the AEB scroll bass.

According to Bruce Johnson:

The "mystery" pickup, as it was called in Ampeg's brochures, is buried in the body underneath the bridge. The bridge itself is mounted on a thin steel diaphragm plate overtop of two big magnetic coils cast into a large epoxy block. It's not a piezo pickup.

AMPEG/DAN ARMSTRONG AMPEG ASUB-1 Devil Bass

AMPEG/DAN ARMSTRONG AMPEG made the ASUB-1 Devil Bass between 1966 and 1968. It was nicknamed the Devil Bass because its two long wicked looking horns - said to have been inspired by the Danelectro longhorn design. The body has two triangular cut-out holes going right though it. Relatively few of these were made (around 100 according to Bruce Johnson) and they were not a commercial success being rather heavy and clumsy to play.

ALVAREZ AEB P1

The Alvarez AEB P1 Panthera bass was made during the early 1990s. To make the body comfortable to play Alavarez carved and dished the back. Pickups were two full range Alvarez units with the resonant frequency selected to match the bass response of this model. The AEB P1 had a massive bridge to increase sustain. The AEB P1 came in black or white finish. The white AEB P1 Pantera basses had slanted abalone position markers and gold hardware. The black ones had dots and chrome hardware. The design of the Alvarez AEB P1 is very similar to the Westone Pantera bass of the 1980s.
