The Rickenbacker 660/12 is the 12 string version of the Rickenbacker 660. It has a solid maple body based on the classic Rickenbacker cresting wave design and a through body maple neck. The origins of the 660/12 began in 1991 as a limited edition model the Rickenbacker 660/12TP designed with input from Tom Petty and which bore his signature from 1991 to around 1998/1999. Tom Petty specified a wider neck than Rickenbacker usually used on their 12 strings, and the 660/12TP had a 1.75 inch wide nut. Other features of the 660/12 are like the 1963 Rickenbacker 625/12 model (apart from the 12 saddle bridge). Around 1000 of these 660/12TPs were made and proved very popular so from 1998/1999 onwards Rickenbacker carried on making the design from 1998 onwards as the 660/12 model.
