The Schecter Tempest (USA) was introduced in 1997 - marking Schecter Guitar Research's 21st anniversary. At this time Schecter was best known as the innovator of the Superstrat design and for its other Fender style model - the company decided to expand their product range with the Tempest, Hellcat and Avenger models.

Schecter described the Tempest as the ultimate hybrid guitar, with its slab mahogany body, 25.5 inches scale length, maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. Other features included two Seymour Duncan p-90s, Sperzel Tuners, tune-o-matic bridge (with choice of tail piece). Finishes included TV yellow, cherry and two tone sunburst. The Tempest Custom model was another variant - with two Black Jack humbuckers, cream body binding and a maple top.
