The Taylor 420 was introduced in 1995 as Taylor's entry level full size dreadnaught acoustic. The 420 was available with Sapele or Cedar tops; and rosewood (420R), pau ferro( 420PF) or maple (420M) back and sides. The binding was Black or White. The 420s were great value guitars - their main differences from the more expensive models (e.g.Taylor 810) were their satin finish and a pinless bridge.

I recently inherited a 1996 420 maple/spruce from my dad. Growing up I’ve always coveted his 420. He had an LR baggs pickup installed so I could lead worship in the church youth center growing up. Playing that combo is like a hot knife through butter! I also have an 810ce, 414ce, and a 214 w that has an aftermarket fishman elipse blend… but now the 420 is my absolute go-to. (I’m sure there are nostalgic reasons for that as well) I love the peg less bridge. It’s unique to these models and has a great palm-mute feel. Also makes changing strings breeze. I also love that these are American made and the serial number is hand written. This guitar is a workhorse and a gem. Definitely priceless in my opinion.

You're wrong about production years. They ran from 92-97. I have a '93 420, sitka spruce/indian rosewood, made August 30. I've played Gib, Guild, Martin, Gretch, but MY Taylor 420 outshines them all until you are into the 3200-3500 dollar range.
