1920 to 1937

The Weissenborn Style 4 is like the Style 3 but it has rope binding on the headstock and back. They may also have a triangular inlay at the first fret. The Style 4 was the most ornate of Weissenborn's instruments. The Style 4 has a 3 inch deep body whose shoulders gently curve into a square hollow neck. It was completely made from Hawaiian koa (although spruce top was optional). The action is raised high - as this guitar is played Hawaiian style with a steel slide, but the fingerboard has inlaid fret lines of white holly to guide intonation. Herman Weissenborn was active from 1920 to 1937 so the original Style-4s date from that period.

Weissenborn's guitars suffered due to the introduction of much louder resonator guitars which were popular with Hawaiian style players. Today, however, there is an appreciation of the rich Weissenborn tone and volume is no longer a problem due to modern amplifiers and acoustic pickups. For this reason reissued Style 4s are now available - Gold Tone makes a Style 4+ model which is an accurate Style 4 replica using correct materials and construction.
