The Yamaha SBG 1000 was made between 1982 and 1989. These were the US marketed versions of the earlier 1970s SG1000 model - possibly for legal reasons Yamaha stopped using the "SG" prefix in the USA in the early1980s.  The SBG1000 has a set neck with rosewood fingerboard, double cutaway thin and light mahogany body - with carved maple top. The SBG1000's 2 humbucking pickups are basically the same as those in the SBG2000 but without covers - for extra sharp highs and more punch. There is a coil-tap switch, smooth linear volume and tone controls for each pickup. Finish options were cherry sunburst or black.

Yamaha reissued the SBG 1000 in 2012 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of this model, with ebony fingerboard. These SBG1000s were individually handcrafted by the luthiers of the Yamaha Music Craft workshop in Hamamatsu, Japan. The one new feature that has been added to the SBG series is Yamaha’s “Initial Response Acceleration” which is a Yamaha technique that accelerates the maturing process of the guitar creating tonal sweet spots and increased stability.
