EPIPHONE manufactured the FT (Flat Top) De Luxe between 1939 and 1942. The FT De Luxe was a flat-topped version of the De Luxe archtop. A later cutaway version was introduced in 1954.
Epiphone described the FT De Luxe as follows in their 1939 catalog:
"DE LUXE is the appropriate name for this unusual flat-topped guitar as it is built to the same high standards as the regular DE LUXE with the carved top.
It is unusually large. being 16.50 inches wide, 20.38 inches long and 4.75 inches deep. Extra vibratory surface is attained by the special shaping of the body. The top is hand graduated for improved tone.
The woods utilized are the finest obtainable. Specially selected tops of vertical grained spruce, curly maple sides, back, and neck. In short the finest woods go into the production of this model.
Equipped with extension tailpiece and pegs finished in burnished gold plate.Beautifully finished in the natural color of the wood or in the EPIPHONE brown with sunburst on top and back and highlighted sides and neck. Edged with alternate black and white pyralin on neck, top and back for both beauty and protection.
The neck is fitted with the famous EPIPHONE internal cantilever brace. 20 frets and hand engraved genuine mother of pearl position marks inlaid on selected rosewood fingerboard joining body at 14th fret. Specify finish desired."
