Gibson introduced the Peter Frampton Les Paul Special as part of the Custom Shop "inspired by" series in 2006. This guitar is based on Frampton's 1958 Les Paul Junior but with some new features that result in a lightweight guitar full of tonal options. The mahogany top covers a weight-relieved (honeycomb-routed) mahogany body and the ebony fingerboard and super-slim neck profile (similar to the Custom Shop's Peter Frampton Signature Les Paul Custom). Pickups are three independently wired  P-90s instead of the humbuckers: each has its own volume control, allowing them to be blended in with or isolated from the others. The middle pickup is always on - it has to be blended in or out with its volume control. The 3-way toggle switch, which functions as it would on a 2-pickup guitar: up for the rhythm pickup, down for the treble, and middle position for both. A master tone knob controls all three pickups.
