The Music Man Steve Morse model was introduced in 1985. This guitar has plenty of pickups: two Morse Signature DiMarzio humbuckers at the neck and bridge with two single coils in the middle. These are controlled by three pickup selectors. Part of Morse's style is to constantly tweak the tone, volume and pickup selector controls for artistic effect and the Music Man Steve Morse model is perfect for this approach with its 11 possible pickup combinations. You can get twangy southern rock single coil sounds as well as the heavier rock tone Morse used with Deep Purple
The Steve Morse model's DiMarzio pickups are (in order from the neck to the bridge):
- DP-205 Morse Signature, 20.5K
- DP-108 Vintage Single Coil, 6.0K
- Proprietary Custom Wound, 5.5K
- DP-200 Morse Signature, 9.6K
These pickups are controlled by three selector switches: a 2-way toggle switch, a 3-way toggle pickup selector and a 3-way lever pickup selector.
The hardware includes locking tuners, a tune-o-matic-type bridge (with thumbwheel height adjustment with individual saddles) and a chrome-plated brass tailpiece. A Music Man Floyd Rose licensed locking tremolo with fine tuners (setup to lowers pitch only) is available as an optional extra.
