Frederich Holtier was born in 1947 in Romania. As a child he learned the cello which led him to study at the Bucharest Music Conservatory and eventually a career as a music teacher.  While still a student he learned about guitar making by helping his father build guitars. After six years of teaching, he decided to change course and enter the field of industrial design. In 1988, he left Romania, emigrating first to Germany, then to the United States. Since 1995, Frederich has been building classical and flamenco guitars professionally.
