Hofner

Höfner was established in 1887 by Karl Höfner (1864 - 1955) - Höfner was a violin maker with a workshop in Schönbach at the center of Eriuopean violin making. His sons joined him in the company which quickly expanded into export markets and started making cellos, violas and double basses. The 1930s saw the addition of guitars to the Höfner product range withthe steel stringed “Schlaggitarren”, forerunners of the modern day archtop. At this point the company employed 30 staff at the Höfner factory but an additional 300 outworkers who worked in their own homes and workshops.

HEMKEN

Michael Hemken hand carves acoustic archtop guitars, violin, violas, and bows. He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1951 but moved California in 1974, where he began repairing musical instrument for musician friends. Two years later carved his first archtop guitar and violin. Since then he has maintained a limited production of one of a kind instruments. Michael is also a master electrician.

GENEVA

Geneva International Corporation was a musical instrument distributer based in Wheeling, Illinois. The company was founded by Earl Matzkin to import pianos from Czechoslovakia. They also imported stringed instruments from China, Korea, Romania and the Czech Republic - and were the US distributer of Amada guitars until 1997. The company distributed Geneva branded acoustic guitars, made in the Czech republic, during the 1980s and 1990s.

ECCLESHALL

Christopher J. Eccleshall is a maker, dealer and repairer of fretted instruments. He makes guitars, violins, mandolins, banjos and dulcimers to order. When he left school in Gosport the mid 1960s, Chris started an apprenticeship as a aircraft engineer but soon left to work as an assistant to a violin maker, John Howard-Lucy in Hastings for three years. He then moved to London to work with Hills of Bond Street before moving to Ealing Strings on Uxbridge Road in 1968. At Ealing Strings he had the opportunity to do some guitar repairs and eventually he left to set up a guitar business of his own in 1971. Before long he was doing work for Clapton, Townshend, The Sweet and Rory Gallagher. Eccleshall is now based in Devon.

MAXTONE

TA FENG LONG ENTERPISE CO., LTD. was established in Taiwan by Apollo C.H. Hsu in 1970 as an exporter of musical instruments, hardware, machine tools, suitcases, luggages, stationery and sporting goods. Mr. Hsu opened his first factory (TAFENGLONG ENT. CO., LTD) in 1977 in Taiping, which made percussion instruments. In 1985 to meet growing demand he opened a second factory, MAXTONE MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MFG. CO., LTD. The company also has manufacturing facilities in China - with the TIANJIN CHANG YANG MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS CO., LTD opened in 2005.
